Emergency Contraception (EC) can safely prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. EC is commonly called the Morning After Pill. Plan B® is the only product currently marketed in the United States as EC. Plan B® is most effective when taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex but can be taken up to 120 hours afterwards. The sooner it is taken, the better.
While the first line of defense in preventing pregnancy should always be to use a traditional form of pre-sex contraception, it is wise to keep Plan B® in the medicine cabinet as “insurance” should “Plan A” fail.
