Household Recycling Days
What's accepted, drop off dates, locations and directions

At Household Recycling Days, residents may drop off household waste that cannot be set out for curbside collection or recycling. We accept residential chemicals only. Materials from businesses, institutions and schools will not be accepted. Follow these simple rules:
  • Remember to close all bags and bottles tightly.
  • All chemicals must be in original or labeled containers.
  • Place all chemicals in a sturdy box and in the trunk of your car.

There is no fee, but pre-registration is required for 100 pounds or more of solid material or 25 gallons or more of liquid. To pre-register, call 211 for the Recycling HelpLine.

The Mobile Shredder is available for residents only. Bring your personal papers to be shredded on-the-spot at no charge.

Get a mercury-free oral thermometer for free when you trade in your old mercury-filled thermometer, compliments of Wheelabrator Westchester, L.P. One per customer while supplies last.

The following items are accepted:

  • Most automotive fluids – antifreeze, brake fluid, gasoline
  • Flammable liquids – kerosene, butane, charcoal fluid, turpentine
  • Metal, jewelry and furniture polishes, wood preservatives, pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, photographic and swimming pool chemicals
  • Fluorescent light bulbs
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Propane tanks (2, 5, 10 and 20 pound tanks)
  • Batteries - auto, alkaline, rechargeable and button cell
  • Air conditioners 
  • Mercury thermometers and thermostats
  • E-waste – computer monitors, TV’s, computer towers, accessories, printers, fax machines, cell phones, small appliances - toasters, blenders, radios, stereos, speakers, lamps
  • White waste - washers, dryers, freezers, stoves, refrigerators
  • Car tires (maximum 10)
  • Expired or unused pharmaceuticals – both prescription and over the counter
  • Plastic grocery bags - bring in 20 bags or more and get a free reusable shopping bag – while supplies last.

The following items are not accepted.  For disposal information, call the Recycling HelpLine at 211.

  • Paint - oil and latex paint can be included with household trash in solid form. Air dry and use kitty litter or waste paint hardener. Exception: Rye Brook, White Plains and Yorktown residents must dispose of empty or hardened paint cans on bulk pick-up days.
  • Motor oil – take to service station or motor oil retail outlet
  • Compressed gas cylinders – helium and oxygen tanks
  • Smoke and fire detectors
  • Explosives – flares, fireworks, ammunition
  • Medical waste – hypodermic needles
  • Materials from commercial and institutional users

Saturday, Sept. 13, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
County Recycling Center, Yonkers
(across from Stew Leonard’s and Home Depot)
From the North: NYS Thruway I-87 South to first exit after toll booth, exit 6A/Stew Leonard Drive. Turn left at light. Follow signs.
From the South: NYS Thruway I-87 North to exit 6A/Stew Leonard Drive (last exit before toll). Proceed straight to stop light. Turn right at light. Follow signs.

Friday, Oct. 24, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 25, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Croton Point Park, Croton-on-Hudson
Croton Point Avenue - Thruway to Exit 9 (Tarrytown). Proceed North on Route 9 for approximately 10 miles and exit at Croton Point Avenue, turn left at end of ramp. Turn left at light. Park entrance straight ahead.

Friday, Nov. 7, 1 p.m.  to 3 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 8, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Playland Park, Rye
Take I-95 to Exit 19/Playland Parkway. Proceed to end of Parkway. Follow signs.

Friday, Nov. 21, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 22, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Glen Island Park, New Rochelle
From the North: Hutch South to exit at Sandford Blvd. Off exit turn right. At 2nd traffic light turn right onto Pelhamdale Avenue. Follow to the end and make a left onto Pelham Road. At first traffic light make a right to enter Glen Island Park.
Or - New England Thruway (95) South to exit 15 (Route 1). Off exit make left onto Route 1 (Post Road). At 2nd light make a right onto Weyman Avenue, follow Weyman Avenue into park.
